In my eyes, pop/rock music from the 1980’s get a terrible rap.

Synth pop and hair metal ruled the charts.

Any self-respecting music connoisseur looks past the charts to what really sounds good.

Aternative rock bands like R.E.M. and The Replacements held their own in the rock underground.  Moreover, killer post-punk groups like the Minutemen and Husker Du transformed the idiom into a viable commodity.  The Beat Farmers and the Blasters kick-started the roots rock movement that would eventually morph into the alt-country scene, along with the cow-punk movement spearheaded by Jason and the Scorchers.  This would also lend a hand in creating the psychobilly style perfected by Reverend Horton Heat, among many others.

New Wave had some great tunes and bands, like the Cars and Talking Heads.

Alternative rock spawned Camper Van Beethoven, Meat Puppets, The Cramps, The Feelies, Au Pairs, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Sonic Youth,  Primal Scream, et al…….groundbreaking stuff.

There’s too many influential acts to name, even the mainstream rockers like The Pretenders and Tom Petty and Van Halen and John Mellencamp kick ass.

One of my favorite forgotten bands from this era–A Certain Ratio

One of my all time favorites–Keep Your Hands To Yourself–Georgia Satellites–THAT’S Rock ‘n’ Roll
