My first real taste of world music was a greatest hits CD of Abdullah Ibrahim, an african jazz and worldbeat innovator.  Of course I had heard Bob Marley and some Peter Tosh and even some Skatalites and other reggae.  When I first got into the Skatalites, it was their “Heroes of Reggae in Dub” that put me over the edge.  Solo recordings from members like Don Drummond and Jackie Mittoo are priceless too.  Fela Kuti and others followed and now I love some of it.  I don’t care for a lot of the pop music from around the globe, but native grooves are easy to find on compilations from all around the world .  Look at your public library.  Even Joe Zawinul and progressive rock with native influences like Indian music and south american music enthralls me
